When you travel by train make sure that you have a seat reservation. In some countries this is a no brainer but reserving your seat is not that common in other countries. Even if usually you expect seats to be free, the extra cost is worth avoiding the risk of standing during a major part of your trip and being unable to work productively.

When you travel abroad, prepare maps in local language in advance so you are prepared for taxis and asking for your way.  Especially in countries where people are not so fluent in English as well as countries not using our alphabet this is very useful.

You can usually get the maps from the websites of hotels conference halls and companies.

Especially during day flights the time in the place can be used to work. As everywhere it is important to reduce interruptions:

1) Seating

If you fly business or first the seat does not matter so much. If you want to use your laptop in economy class try to get a seat at the emergency exit or in front of a section wall. You have no person sitting in front of you who could decline the seat making it almost impossible for you to use your computer. Only be careful during holiday season since you might find a lot of families with very small kids on these seats

2) Avoid to be disturbed by your neighbor

If you want avoid being disturbed by your neighbor if you immediately put on your headphones - even if you do not want to listen to the music.

Plan transit time

by Nicolas

You should not only plan your meetings but also explicitly plan the transit time to get there and back. This is especially true when you use an electronic calender where other people in your network can also see if you are free or not.

In case you do not plan the transit time the time will look free and other people might schedule an appointment although you are not yet back to the office yet.

Airplane seating

by Nicolas

As a general rule the more you sit in the front the faster you can get off the plane, to immigration etc.

If space for your legs is important the emergency seat or the seat at the doors will be perfect.

If you sit in economy class the seats in front of the section walls have the advantage that there you no passenger in front of you who could squeeze you using the declining seat functionality.

However, these seats are also often assigned to families with small children because you can attach a small bed to the wall for the babies.

The seatguru website provided by tripadvisor is a very valuable source for detailed seat map graphics including color codes for superior and substandard seats for most airplanes and airlines.

Ask the hotel at your destination if they can pick you up at the airport. It might cost come extra money but this is the most effective way to avoid taxi queues or finding out which bus to take.

If you know in advance when you will need a taxi, reserve it in advance. It will avoid that you stand in a queue (especially when it starts raining or a convention in the hotel ends, etc.).
