Many large hotels have an executive floor with a lounge. The lounge bundles almost all hotel services in one convenient place. You can check-in and check-out, they provide business support and concierge services and you can serve yourself with food and drinks most of the time. If you spend a lot of time at a hotel, using the executive floor can save you tremendous time worth paying a little extra money.

Choose your one or two preferred hotel chains and become member of their loyalty program. Normally you can expect the following benefits:

  • Faster reservation and check-in procedures since your data has been stored already
  • Fulfillment of your expectations since your preferences are stored
  • Preferred status in case the hotel is overbooked
  • Upgrades from time to time
  • Special discounts
  • Your room usually is kept available even for unexpected late check-in

Ask your company if there are preferred hotels to align your hotel choice with a company policy. In case there is no such policy inform your assistant or other people who help you with your travel bookings which hotel chain they should use for you in future.

When you are traveling on business you are more concerned about time than a nice view from your hotel window. The higher your floor in the building the more time you will spend in the elevator. It therefore is a good idea to ask for a room on the lower floors because it will save you time each day when you leave from  and return to the hotel. Depending on how many floors the building has you might even be able to use the stairs instead the elevator.

If you are using the hotel lounge make sure that your room is on the same floor as the lounge, so that you avoid using the elevator at all between your room and the lounge.

Most people check out in hotel at specific times, which leads to peaks at the reception. Typical peak times at the reception are 12:00 (the final check-out time), as well 8:00 and 9:00 am. Try to avoid these times and your check-out will go much faster.

Another strategy to save time when checking out is to ask the reception to prepare your bill the evening before you leave. many business hotels offer this service and it is worth asking for it during check-in.

Unless you stay in a hotel for a longer period you should not use the drawers but keep your things in the suitcase. When you will pack for leaving all your things will be around the suitcase and it is less likely that you forget something.

Tipping in Hotels

by Nicolas

If you stay in the same hotel for a few days give a very good tip when you arrive not when you leave. The receiver of the tip is likely to tell other staff members about this and they will try to please you hoping to also benefit from your generosity. It is then up to you if you keep rewarding above average service and at what price.

Ask the hotel at your destination if they can pick you up at the airport. It might cost come extra money but this is the most effective way to avoid taxi queues or finding out which bus to take.

If you know in advance when you will need a taxi, reserve it in advance. It will avoid that you stand in a queue (especially when it starts raining or a convention in the hotel ends, etc.).
