The air in airplane is very dry and it therefore is important to drink a lot to keep body hydration. When you fly economy I recommend buying a bottle of water just before boarding (after the security check) so that are independent from the beverage service inside the plane and drink whenever you want.

By the way, extra water will stop your blood from thickening and it therefore helps to protect you against  DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). This is especially true since you will also go to the washroom making you exercise a little bit.

When you carry handluggage only you can also directly go to the gate and check in there. You then do not have to wait and queue at the check-in counter. This can easily save you 30 minutes per trip.

Some airlines will print the boarding card for the return flight already at the time of the first check in. It will save you to queue at the check-in counter when coming back. This can easily save you 20 to 30 minutes depending on the airport and your frequent flyer status.

This will also increase the probability of getting the seat you want.

With only few global brands of makers a lot of people have the same or a similarly looking laptop. I heard of a case where two identical laptops of two people were mixed up in airport security and both arrived at their destination with the wrong machine.

The best way to avoid such things is to individualize your laptop with stickers of your company logo or something else which you like and which also complies with your company policy.

Crossing time-zones is especially tiring and it can significantly reduce your personal productivity. By being cautious and following the following recommendations you can significantly reduce the jet-lag.

1) Physical preparation

It is important to drink a lot of fluid. Water is best. Please don’t forget that alcohol will dehydrate your body although you are drinking. The airlines recommend drinking one glass of water per hour.

2) Stay in your time zone

For short trips it does not make sense to adjust to the new time zone. Otherwise just after getting used to the new time zone you will have to readjust back home.

You should therefore try to schedule meetings that they better suit your biological time and also go to be and get-up as close as possible to your home country’s time.

3) Adapt quickly

  • Switch your watch immediately to the time of your destination, so that you start thinking and behaving accordingly.
  • Only sleep when it is appropriate according the time zone you are in. It will be hard in the beginning. However, when you finally go to bed you will tired and the chances to sleep longer increase.
  • Day light has a lot of influence on your biological time clock. Exposing your body to daylight as much as possible will accelerate the process of acclimatization.
  • Exercising will also help in two ways. On one hand it might increase your exposure to day light if your exercise outdoors. On the other side it will make you tired so that you are more likely to sleep. It is also said that exersizing between late afternoon and early evening is the optimal time to reset your clock more quickly.
  • It is best to eat little before your journey. When you arrive at your destination start eating according to your new time zone. When you arrive in the morning, have breakfast, etc.

Especially during day flights the time in the place can be used to work. As everywhere it is important to reduce interruptions:

1) Seating

If you fly business or first the seat does not matter so much. If you want to use your laptop in economy class try to get a seat at the emergency exit or in front of a section wall. You have no person sitting in front of you who could decline the seat making it almost impossible for you to use your computer. Only be careful during holiday season since you might find a lot of families with very small kids on these seats

2) Avoid to be disturbed by your neighbor

If you want avoid being disturbed by your neighbor if you immediately put on your headphones - even if you do not want to listen to the music.

Airplane seating

by Nicolas

As a general rule the more you sit in the front the faster you can get off the plane, to immigration etc.

If space for your legs is important the emergency seat or the seat at the doors will be perfect.

If you sit in economy class the seats in front of the section walls have the advantage that there you no passenger in front of you who could squeeze you using the declining seat functionality.

However, these seats are also often assigned to families with small children because you can attach a small bed to the wall for the babies.

The seatguru website provided by tripadvisor is a very valuable source for detailed seat map graphics including color codes for superior and substandard seats for most airplanes and airlines.

When traveling abroad you tend to end up with all kinds of coins in your pockets. Do not bring them home (unless to give them away to someone who collects them). Keeping the change for a long time means that you have to store it somewhere, remember it in case you visit this country again and to face the risk that the  money is not valid tender anymore after a few years.

If you have a larger amount of foreign currency exchange it back into your home currency. Many airlines and most airports collect change in foreign currencies for charity purposes. Donate the rest of your foreign currency and you do good to others as well as your time management.

Many people immediately go to the toilet after leaving the plane. This leads to queues close to the arrival gate. If you can hold you better take the next toilet in the direction of arrivals. The probability of having to queue there is generally much lower and you get out quicker.
