Long distance flights are often at night. Although these flights are a great opportunity to get a little bit of sleep, I know many people telling me that they cannot sleep on the plane. This is a collection of a few items that help falling asleep in a plane.

1) Fall asleep during take-off

Did you ever notice that many people fall asleep during take-off and landing of the plane? The air inside the plane gets recycled without adding fresh air at these times, so that the oxygen level is dropping. This sudden drop makes us feel asleep. This means that you should plan to start sleeping during take-off. Although you are not allowed to decline your seat you should get into a comfortable position and close your eyes once the plane starts moving away from its parking position.

2) Use earplugs

You might not always realize it since the sound is very stable but it is very loud inside a plane. You have the sound of the motor, of the air-conditioning and the air outside in addition to all kind of noises made by other passengers and the staff. The easiest way to reduce the noise level is to use earplugs. Headphones with noise reduction function are a great option if you don’t find them too large.

3) Use the eye-shield

Use an eye-shield to protect from the bright light and the constant movements taking place in a plane at all times.

4) Tell the purser you want to sleep

Once you are sleeping you don’t want to wake up just because they are serving some meal or drinks. Let the purser know early that you don’t want to be disturbed and that you are ready to skip a meal in case you are sleeping. Some airlines even offer stickers to indicate this wish for night flights.

5) Don’t check the inflight entertainment program

More and more planes have personal inflight entertainment systems in each seat including the economy class. Having a choice of a few dozen movies and games you will certainly find something interesting. If you want to sleep on the plane you therefore better don’t even look at the program. Once you start watching a movie it probably will take you more time to fall asleep.

6) Reserve a comfortable seat

In first or business class it does not matter so much which seat you are in. If you fly economy class you should try to get a seat in front of a wall or the emergency exit since it provides more space. When I want to sleep on the plane I usually get a window seat. You can put the pillow into the window and win a few additional centimeters of space.

7) Wear clothes to relax

Wear loose clothes if you want to sleep on the plane. Use trousers without a belt. Since it is cold in high altitude you should also take something warm with you. It is hard to sleep when you are freezing.

8) Don’t drink alcohol

Alcohol helps you to fall asleep but the quality of your sleep is low. Considering all the noise and possible interruptions in the plane I recommend not drinking alcohol. It might take longer until you sleep but you will sleep much better. Please also consider that with high altitude your reacts more sensitively to alcohol than usual.

Many large hotels have an executive floor with a lounge. The lounge bundles almost all hotel services in one convenient place. You can check-in and check-out, they provide business support and concierge services and you can serve yourself with food and drinks most of the time. If you spend a lot of time at a hotel, using the executive floor can save you tremendous time worth paying a little extra money.

When traveling abroad your don’t want to run out of cash - especially considering that some countries do not yet such a broad acceptance of credit cards. Same places also have restrictions with regards to ATMs. It might not only be difficult to find an ATM, but some ATMs are restricted to domestic use and don’t accept international banking or credit cards.

You can check the availability of ATM in the world on a website from Visa. Here you also are sure that the ATM accept international cards.

Choose your one or two preferred hotel chains and become member of their loyalty program. Normally you can expect the following benefits:

  • Faster reservation and check-in procedures since your data has been stored already
  • Fulfillment of your expectations since your preferences are stored
  • Preferred status in case the hotel is overbooked
  • Upgrades from time to time
  • Special discounts
  • Your room usually is kept available even for unexpected late check-in

Ask your company if there are preferred hotels to align your hotel choice with a company policy. In case there is no such policy inform your assistant or other people who help you with your travel bookings which hotel chain they should use for you in future.

Prepare a detailed travel itinerary which includes the following information for every day:

  • Flight / train number, departure and arrival time, terminal, etc.
  • Hotel name and address as well as telephone number and reservation number
  • Each meeting and its location as well as your contact person’s mobile phone number

Print the itinerary and carry it in your hand-luggage. An electronic version is not enough since you need to be able to access it anytime and anywhere regardless of the status of your mobile devices’ battery life.

Nowadays escalators are found everywhere in airports, stations, shopping malls and even office buildings. They invite us to take a rest while being transported up or down. Take the opportunity to walk on the escalator. It increases your walking speed considerably and also gives you a little bit of exercise.

When traveling there are at least two occasions to forget something - when you pack to leave and when you pack to return. To avoid forgetting something it is a good idea to use a travel checklist. There now is a website that professionalizes travel checklists by offering a free service.

dont-forget-your-toothbrush

Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush provides lists with predefined travel checklists for all kinds to holidays and destinations. These predefined travel checklists are based on travel themes, such as:

Depending on the place you  live a car can be close to mandatory to ensure mobility. Increasing traffic means that the time spend in the car keeps growing and for many of us the car is not only used for commuting but it is an essential part of work. It therefore makes a lot of sense to me to apply time management and organization to the usage of a car.In a first article I want to write on how to keep your car clean and free from clutter.

1) First cleaning effort

If you recently refused to give someone a lift because you felt embarrassed about the mess in your car, you first have to go through a sorrow cleaning exercise. As a first step you take a big dust bin to your car and throw away  all rubbish and left overs. During this activity you should also go through  the glove department, the trunk and all other places. In the next step you take some warm water and a sponge to wipe all places and the inner side of the windows clean. You then thoroughly vacuum clean the car. When the car is absolutely clean you make a nice photo of it which you then fix inside the car. Each time you look at it you will reminded to keep the car clean. At the end you can put something in to keep a nice small in the car.

2) Objects you should have in your car

You should keep the originals or better a copy of the owner’s manual, the car warranty, some insurance documents and other documents you might need in the glove department. It is also good to keep a piece of paper with the most important emergency numbers. In case of an accident you might have lost your mobile phone or just forget some number under shock. You might also keep some maps in case your car is not equipped with a navigation system.

Keep a dust box, so that you don’t throw things on the floor or on the back seats. Also avoid using the ashtray. It is difficult to clean later. You might also keep a box of kleenex or baby wipes, so that you can directly wipe away small stains. In general you better have few objects only in your car and they should not be on the back-shelf. In case of an accident they   will dash forward and possibly hurt any passengers.

3) Objects that do not belong there

Get rid of mugs, a large collection of CDs ,etc. magazines and other stuff. I also recommend reducing decoration items to a minimum.

4) How to keep the car clean

  • Keep a box in your car for trash. Any trash which occurs in your car directly goes in the box, so that you can easily empty it later.
  • When you arrive at your destination get all stuff that does not permanently belong there out of your car. Also make it a habit to empty the trash box whenever you stop as gas stations etc.
  • Plan a regular cash cleaning routine and include it into your other checklists. If you can afford it, let others take care of it. If you have children they also might be happy to clean the car for a little bit of extra cash.
  • You might also create a separate checklist for all car related items including its maintenance

We all know the feeling of standing in the wrong queue which does not move compared to the other queues. Although the real time difference usually is very short, it feels like ages. When approaching an area with multiple queues a quick check of a few parameters can help at least not to stand in the worst queue:

1) Check the clerk

Does the person look experienced? How is the working speed compared to others? If two people sit in the same booth you can be sure that you will deal with a trainee under supervision who will be very accurate but slow.

2) Check the people in the queue

Do you foresee some people where it might take time. If you queue for the security check at an airport avoid standing behind people who have a lot of luggage or people who are exited about their trip since they might be very experienced with the procedures.

3) When the queue turns

Queues that turn around a pillar or a corner tend to have a congestion where it turns - especially around pillars or other obstacles. If available you therefore better choose another line without such an obstacle.
