I always was fascinated  by the transformation women undergo when putting on their make-up before going out. I also found it amusing to watch the multitude of cosmetic items, tools and accessories. A few interviews with female friends and the study of magazines and other blogs on the Internet gave me the impression that the organization of women’s cosmetics would give an interesting article on my blog - and here it is.

1) Clean up

Before talking on how to organize your your cosmetics it probably makes a lot of sense to go through the inventory. Examine the products sincerely replying to the following 5 questions for each single item. Go through the cosmetics in your bathroom and don’t forget the other locations as your bags, etc.:

  • Does it still look good?

  • Does it have a smell?

  • Do you still like it?

  • Did you use it during the last three months?

  • Are you likely to use it within the next four weeks?

Be very hard on yourself and dispose any item that did not fulfill one or more of the above criteria. If you threw away too much, it does not matter - you will soon enjoy buying something new. Clean all items you want to keep and some will look like new once make-up powder has been removed.

2) Cosmetics for daily and for special purpose

In the next step you group cosmetics into those used avery day and those for special occasions such as dates or parties. Keep the ones you use every day at very at the most convenient place in your bathroom and these are the only ones you should carry with you. The other ones can be kept at less convenient places where you pick them up only when required for these special occasions. Since most variety often is with the cosmetics for special occasions you can significantly reduce the clutter in your bathroom and bags. Depending on how much you keep it is a good idea to group your cosmetics by application area such as lips, eyes, face…

3) Accessory

Go through the same steps for your cosmetic’s related accessory such as brushes, etc. In general I recommend buying high quality accessory. You enjoy using them and they also last for longer so that you spend less over time.

4) Maintain

Make a list of all items you regularly need. When you go shopping this list will help you to buy the right items and it will also remind you that you already have a lot of stuff. This might reduce to impulse to spontaneously buy similar items. On the other hand the list helps you to identify spots where you might want to look for new or additional items.

5) Travel

When you buy cosmetics ask to get samples of your day to day cosmetics too. You can use them when you travel and this helps reducing your luggage.

There are at least two reasons to think about our bed and its accessories. Sleep represents about one third of our life’s. Secondly a good sleep has high impact on our well being and productivity. In order to get most out of our time management techniques we need to be fresh. I therefore want to share a few thoughts on our sleep and the related equipment.

1) Get the best bed you can afford:

Buying a good bed can be a major investment. Considering the negative impact of bad sleep on your productivity and its eventual negative impact on your income I recommend buying the best bed you can afford. Many manufacturers offer a complete package including the frame, the mattress and other accessories. This of course is very convenient but it will rarely entirely fulfill your individual requirements. I therefore deal with each component of a bed one by one, so that you can made a comprehensive decision when purchasing a new bed or just some components.

2) The bed frame:

One of the first questions to be answered is the size of the bed frame. This depends on the number of people to sleep on it, the size of your bed room as well as the space you need to feel good. Part of this of course is also the length, which mainly depends on your body size. When two people sleep in the same bed you disturb each other less the larger the bed is. You can check how space you need by taking your typical sleeping position next to each other in the shop.

Another basic decision is if you want to have one large mattress or if you plan having two in order to accommodate different needs of two persons (e.g. two people with a strong difference in weight). In case you want to have two the frame must allow having two separate box springs.

Is it important to you that the head and or feet sections can be elevated (for the entire bed or separately for each person)?

Do you want to use the space under the bed as storage with drawers or do you want to have open space?

Depending on how often you move your household an important criteria might also be how easy it is to assemble and disassemble the frame.

3) The mattress:

When buying a new mattress you must look for comfort and support. Whereas comfort is important in order to relax, support is important to keep your body in a healthy shape over your eight hours of sleep.

Test the mattresses available in the shop by laying down on it for a while. Play particular attention to areas of your body such as shoulders, hips and the lower part of your back. You can test the support when laying flat on your back. Put your hand under you back. If you have a gap the mattress might be too hard. If there is no space for your hand the mattress is probably too soft.

Buying a new mattress is not the most exiting thing and most of us tend to push this back as much as possible. Investing into durability will therefore give you a longer freedom until you have to renew it. The durability is determined by the material the mattress is made of and you should ask the sales clerk to spend a lot of time explaining the differences to you.

Never buy a new mattress without exchanging the box spring. When your mattress is due to renewal normally the box spring is due too.

4) Pillows:

Your pillow is the accessory requiring the highest frequency for replacement. Since we all are unique this is a very individual decision. A few questions shall help finding out what best works for you, mostly depending on your sleeping position.

  • Sleeping on your stomach: try a low and soft pillow
  • Sleeping on your back: try a firm or medium firm pillow
  • Sleeping on your side: try a firm or extra firm pillow

If you suffer from allergies you should ask the sales clerk to show you suitable offers of synthetic material.

Men seem to increasingly spend time for personal care. Optimizing the daily personal care routine can significantly save time and contribute to contentment with oneself.

  • Sort your neckties by color and get rid of those you don’t wear anymore
  • Sort your shirts by color
  • Give your shirts to a cleaning company and receive them folded - especially if you travel a lot
  • Use shoe trees. If you don’t like stooping down to take care of your shoes, put a rack on the wall in the entrance
  • Use industrial shaving foam on working days
  • Use an electric shaver on working days since it is faster

Rain is not good for your shoes and they require  lot of maintenance to stay in shape after becoming wet.

I therefore recommend having one pair of shoes dedicated to rainy days. These shoes could be older than your other shoes or more robust. If you now go to buy a pair of shoes for rain consider the following criteria:

  • A sole of thick rubber
  • A strong tread so that you don’t slip
  • A surface easy to clean (such as patent leather shoe if you like this)

I am pretty sure that women have more tips on this and hope some of you to post some more ideas in the comments :)

Usually all members of a family will share a bathroom and each person has preferences on shampoo, soap and other items for personal care. If they are all flying around you will lose time searching for your own items and this also is a potential source of conflict if one is using other peoples staff by mistake.

I therefore recommend having a small plastic basket for each person which includes his or her items for personal care. If the bathroom is too small to store all items at one this also will allow everyone to easily bring their items in and out.

When you purchase the plastic baskets make sure that they have wholes on the bottom and side so that incoming water can flow out making it also easier to clean them from time to time.

If it is important for you to have a great variety of shoes and don’t want to reduce it you still can save time when looking for the right shoes. Instead of opening each show box to check which pair of shoes is in you better make a photo of the shoes and fix it outside the box.

You will then always find the shoes you have in mind quickly. In case you not yet sure it can also inspire you to see all the photos and you might even get a feeling on what kind of shoe still is missing in your collection :)

Byuing new shoes

by Nicolas

When you buy a new pair of shoes you should wear the oldest pair of existing shoes, which is due for disposal.

After you have chosen the new shoes in the shop you can then put on the new ones immediately and let the show dispose your old pair of shoes. They might not like it but it is they easiest and fastest way to get rid of your old shoes. If you are lucky the shoes even go into proper recycling.

When you have clothes that need dry cleaning make sure that sets and combinations always go there together, even if only one piece is dirty. The cleaning process changes the color over time and 2 pieces with belong together might not have exactly the same color anymore after a few separate cleanings. So the jacket always goes with the trousers or the skirt.

Plan your time to make sports and to exercise in your calendar like any other appointment. Otherwise it will always have lower priority compared to other appointments and the time slot will easily get used for other activities.

Put a note inside your cupboard where you write down a few new combination of your clothes. When you are in a hurry or unsure you can just refer to your note.
