If you have a lot of books you will have worked out a way of storing them in your bookshelves over the years. You probably never have thought about the best order. A very common mistake is to sort the books by size so that they look nice and clean. The disadvantage is that in terms of author and contents they will be completely mixed up.

The best way to store your books is as libraries or book stores do. They group them by author or by theme so that you know where to search for a book reducing the time to identify it. You might even create a catalogue or inventory of your books.

  2. Great suggestion. I actually mix methods storing in libraries as you’ve said, but then within book size within the library so things have some semblance of neatness. My libraries aren’t too large so it is still easy to find the book I need. My larger issue relating to books is storing the names and authors of books I hear about so I can obtain them later for purchase or review at the book store. Recently I’ve begun using my GTD system for this task. When I hear or read about an interesting book, I call it in to my GTD and then just refer to my list when I am at the book store since my GTD is available from my cell phone. I’ve written about the system in a blog post at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/more-getting-things-done/ John
