Once your plane has landed you want to get out as fast as possible. The place you stored your handluggage can influence the speed of getting out.

The best place is to have your hand luggage under your front seat. After landing, you just pick it up and go.

If it is too large to be stored under the front seat or you sit at an emergency exit or wall, there is no other choice that putting it into the storage place on top. Never use a case behind you since you will have to return against the flow of people later. It is better to store it a bit in front if possible.

Sometimes there is no storage available anymore. In this case you should ask the staff to store it somewhere in the front and not in the back, so that you can collect it on your way out.
